Ohio Northern University: Diversifying Northern’s Study Abroad Students - 2024
Ohio Northern University (ONU) expanded access to global learning opportunities for students participating in spring and summer 2024 study abroad programs. The Inspiration Diversity Campus Grant helped ensure students from a variety of backgrounds could more fully participate in the cultural and academic experiences offered through ONU’s international programs.
More than 40 students from ONU’s four undergraduate colleges studied abroad for programs lasting two to ten weeks. As part of ongoing efforts to broaden participation in global education, the Office of Global Initiatives intentionally focused on supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds. Five grant recipients were selected through an application process that invited students to reflect on their identities, experiences, and goals for studying abroad.
Before departure, recipients participated in orientation sessions led by the Office of Global Initiatives to prepare for the cultural and personal aspects of their international experiences. Students explored topics such as cultural observation, reflection, and strategies for navigating new environments.
A key component of the program was participation in the TalentedU Learning Center, provided through OFIC. Students completed the Equity & Inclusion career readiness module prior to departure and an additional module after returning to campus. These TalentedU courses encouraged reflection on the intercultural skills gained through study abroad and helped students identify how their experiences strengthened their professional development.
Following their return, students worked with Polar Careers to translate their global experiences into career-ready skills for resumes and interviews. Many also shared their experiences with peers, helping inspire future students to explore study abroad opportunities.
