Partners in Purpose: Investing in Ohio’s Talent and Promise A message from Sue Hasseler, President of Muskingum University
Across Ohio, independent colleges, OFIC, and corporate and philanthropic leaders are working together to support student success and strengthen the state’s economy. OFIC represents Ohio’s independent colleges and helps fund scholarships that expand access and opportunity for students across the state.
Sue Hasseler, President of Muskingum University
One of OFIC’s 31 member campuses is Muskingum University, where President Sue Hasseler believes education is both a public good and a personal commitment. While OFIC raises millions each year for scholarships, internships, and career development, Hasseler notes that its true impact is seen in students who gain opportunities to discover their strengths, build confidence, and prepare for meaningful careers.
At Muskingum University and other campuses across Ohio, many students come from small towns or families with limited resources. Scholarships help them remain enrolled. Mentors and faculty guide them through academic challenges, while research opportunities and hands-on experiences allow students to discover what they are capable of.
Hasseler emphasizes that independent colleges offer something essential. Students are known as individuals. They are challenged academically and personally. They develop necessary skills such as clear communication, ethical judgment, collaboration, and the ability to adapt in a rapidly changing world. Much of this learning happens in the classroom, but it is also shaped by internships and work experiences made possible through strong partnerships.
Today’s students are Ohio’s next generation of civic and corporate leaders. Their talent and promise reflect the collective investment of institutions, donors, business partners, and communities working toward a shared purpose. When we invest in students, we invest in Ohio’s future. Partnerships make that investment possible, and the impact grows with every student who graduates ready to lead, serve, and contribute.
